Guide to Intervention

print page

We know how frustrating dealing with an addict is. You have tried talking and it just does not work. They go right back to the same behavior. These steps will help guide you though the basics of intervention.

  • Preplanning
  • Get Professional Help
  • Prepare with your group
  • Take immediate action at end of the intervention

The Preplanning

Start by going to the people closest to the addict and speak to them about your intervention plans. You will want his closest family and friends to help. i.e. the people he cares about. Keep the group simple and small.

Get Professional Help

It will be a great help to talk to an intervention specialist for two reasons.

  1. The intervention specialist, after understanding your case, will be a great help in advising you what steps to take for your situation and may be able to help moderate the group if needed.

  2. At the end of the intervention you will want to have a detox (if needed) and a rehabilitation center lined up and waiting for him. Waiting even a day or two may allow the addict to rethink his situation and back out of going to rehab.

Prepare with your group

With or without the help of an intervention specialist, the group will need to meet and decide what is going to be said and who will say it. Rehab and other treatment options will need to have been made in advance, It is not a bad idea to have notes prepared beforehand as this will be an uncomfortable situation and will be easy to forget plans made in advance. You will want to make sure that everyone is taking a "caring" approach and not too condemning. You want the addict to feel you really care. An ultimatum needs to presented to push the addict into agreeing to go to treatment.

Take immediate action

After the intervention, the addict will have either admitted or denied they have a problem. If they are willing, help them pack a bag and take them to the treatment center you lined up in the planning stage. If they are unwilling to admit they have a problem or are unwilling to go to treatment you will need to begin the consequences of the ultimatum you presented. This may force him to rethink his actions and decide to go to treatment in a few days.
